Since moving to Perth, I realized that I need to put together a bucket list of things that I would like to do while here. Not only am I in a new country, but since I am staying home, I will have more time. I need to feel productive while I stay home or I am going to go crazy....Here are a few:
1. Parasail
2. See a kangaroo
3. Visit the BIG rock....not sure the real name
4. Travel to New Zealand, Singapore, Melbourne
5. Visit the Sydney Opera House
6. Become a better baker
7. Get fit
8. Whale watching
9. Visit the Outback
10. Learn photography
The last thing on my list is to learn how to use my SLR camera. It is one of those things that you buy that you never really take the time to learn what to do with it beyond the basics. At least that is what I did. So since there scenery is here and I want to chronicle all of our adventures, I decided this would a be a good hobby to try. I signed up for a photography class on May 11th. It is a full day course where we are taught our cameras, lighting techniques, finding that perfect picture etc.
When I think about it, photography seems like a natural hobby for me. I love memories and traveling down memory lane. I want to be able to capture special moments for my girls that tell stories they can remember forever.
Be prepared to see a lot of random, useless photos because I am going to eat up my memory card taking TONS of pictures. I really am excited. Hopefully I will learn a lot of new things, become a better photographer and capture amazing memories!
As far as my other items on my bucket list...it is going to be an ongoing list. I will let you know what I add!!

Its name was Freo, and it's a city by the sea...
So in my mind, that title was sung to the tune "Her name was Rio..." But onto the point of this post. Addie had a puppet class today in Freemantle (Freo), so instead of driving back home, we decided to explore.
Once we got down there, we were completely surprised by what we found. Freemantle is a wonderful historic city. Mixed in between with the old buildings were new department stores and quaint shops. Dustin, Morgan, and I strolled up and down the streets popping into whichever store looked interesting. It was nice to window shop and just look.
What was even nicer was to spend time with Dustin and Morgan. Just talking and being with each other.... Morgan had our undivided attention. I love those times with her. She asks the best questions...like today "Mom, if you could stay any age forever, what would it be?" Wow, that made me pause and think....(I am still thinking of my answer).
We spent 6 hours down in Freemantle, shopping, eating, and just sitting and people watching. I really like Fremantle, and really liked my day.
Next time I am taking the train to Freemantle to explore the city. Cannot wait =)

School days
Well the first term is over and the girls do not go back to school until April 26th. They were rather busy in the classroom, but contrary to public school in Texas, I did not receive a formal report card for either girl. Instead, they were sent home with a a portfolio of their work over the 9 weeks. The school is following the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum, which I think we will really enjoy and appreciate in the long run, but right now it seems foreign to me to not receive grades on anything. The girls are happy and every time I talk to their teachers, I am told how well the girls are doing. So I suppose I should not worry....yet ;)
I will say though, that they are really doing some neat things in the classroom. Addie is learning time, and Morgan gave her first self written speech. Of course the speech teacher in me had to remember that she is ONLY 8....and this was her first major speech. Seriously she did really well....
One of Morgan's projects was to follow a recipe and make something at home. We decided on homemade ice cream. She did a great job with everything except reading the measurement for the salt. So instead of 1/8 of teaspoon....we had 1tsp. Oooppps :) It still was yummy!
The last week of school, I went and cooked with Addie's class for two days. We made shortbread cookies and decorated "biscuits" to look like bunny rabbits. It was too cute to see all the kids kneading the dough and using cookie cutters. I had to explain several times which side of the cookie cutter to use. I also had to redirect a little boy to put the rolling pins in the sink instead of hitting someone on the head ;) Thank goodness boys have to go to a different school next year!!!!
When we return for Term 2, the girls will start wearing their winter uniform. This is not much of a change for Addie, she will just wear long sleeves and a cardigan (carrdie) on cold days. For Morgan we had to purchase a sweater (jumper), blazer, and beret. She will no longer wear the Panama hat. I will be sure to take pictures on their first day to wear the winter uniform!!!!!
I am rather thankful for their school, I have met a lot of really nice moms, and it has given me an outlet to volunteer and fill my days. Next term I am going to go back into the classroom for Addie and teach a small group lesson of my choice. I am thinking a craft of some sort.
I also have joined their version of PTO/PTA called Auxillary. When I am not at school helping, the moms and I are either having coffee or walking in the mornings on the beach. I think I have settled into being a stay at home mom ;) Dustin hopes I am going to enjoy my 4 year "vacation" =)

A little bit of this....a little bit of that
Come Easter Sunday, we will have officially been in Perth for 3 months. We get to celebrate Jesus and our Australian anniversary that weekend. Things have been really busy....still trying to get some things settled...like our phone from home. I thought I had figured out how to forward our Houston number here to Perth...apparently I had not though because nobody could call....BUT we got that figured out and now you can ALL call our Houston number and reach us here in Perth. Also I started organizing our office. After spending a mind boggling 2 hours in IKEA, I found desks for our office. They are not our first or even second choice for office furniture, but it will work for 4 years. The problem is that most furniture and decor here is very modern. I still need to get a bookcase or two, but otherwise the office is now a functional space....finally! IKEA sends my mind on overload. They have so many things with so many choices, that I have to go with a specific idea, or I wind up putting everything in my cart and then putting it all back because none of it matches.
As most of you saw on Facebook, Morgan had her swim carnival at school. All girls in years 1 - 6 participated in everything from noodle races to actual swim events. First let me explain, during PE at school, the girls participate in swim, and Morgan was on the swim squad after school. It was not competition swim, but they worked on their strokes and endurance. So I would often ask Morgan how she was doing, was she improving, was she getting faster, etc. Her response each time would be "I am doing well", "No, I am not that fast", "There are people faster than me". SOOOOO back to the swim carnival, I was not sure what to expect from Morgan. I told her to do her best and that she would do great. They had her signed up for 10 events...the first being the fun relay races and the rest her individual swims. Morgan did AWESOME!!! In all of her individual events, she placed FIRST. In freestyle, she literally was a person length ahead of the rest of the girls. We were incredibly proud of her, but most important so incredibly happy to see her confidence soar. Addie's class had an Easter Egg Hunt on Friday after school. We all went to a local park and the kids got to hunt for 2 plastic eggs each. They then took those eggs and traded them in for a bag of chocolate eggs. In talking to the other mothers I found out that they do not fill plastic eggs here, they just hide the hard boiled eggs and an Easter Basket. Also they do not color the eggs. So I am hoping to make homemade egg dye so we can dye our eggs. Addie had a great time finding eggs and then playing on the playground with her friends. It was a great day =)

Dustin competed in his first 10K in Australia. His time has improved and he did really well! Things were pretty similar to races back home, but just not as much fan fair after the race. Again, Australia scales most things down and focuses on the purpose of why people are gathered. They did however have running commentary of the race for those of us that stayed behind to watch. We were expecting Bob Costas at any moment to get into the sound booth ;) My camera was not working so well, so I did not get too many pictures. But here is one of Dustin and his girls....most important pic ;)
I really need to be better at blogging more often so the posts are not so long. We are off school from April 5th until April 26th...so I will have a lot to post then!

A little bit of home...
Friday, March 9th was a BIG day for us. Two months and two days after we arrived in Perth, our sea shipment arrived at our house. Honestly it took a big longer than I thought it would, but after hearing from lots of expats, we actually got very lucky! Our shipment was delayed only about 2 weeks and many have had their shipment delayed a month or more.
For those of you that don't know, we have been living with rental EVERYTHING....towels, silverware, furniture, lamps, bedding, small appliances, etc. So all of that had to be removed before our stuff could be unpacked.
The day went smoothly....at 8 am the rental furniture was removed, and at 10:30 am the movers showed up. Every communication we received from the shipping company said that they are going to provide full unpacking service. When I asked how long they planned to be at the house, they said 4 hours. Now, it took 4 people 4 DAYS to pack our house in Houston. These people are telling me they are going to move everything in and unpack everything in 4 HOURS???? I was skeptical.....
I should have trusted them, because what we forgot was that half of our house was left in storage back in Houston. In the end we packed MUCH lighter than we thought. Overall, we really did bring the basics...and honestly I do not think we are going to miss the things in storage all that much. A lot of what went to storage were things that we did not use on a daily basis. Pictures, china, dining room furniture, plus other things we could not take with us. Rest assured though that my Barney (my stuffed animal from birth) came on the plane with us. I could not leave him behind ;) and NO it was not the purple dinosaur.
Anyways, back to the day. The movers started at 11am and left our house around 4. They really did get finished in one day!
They did a great job of moving the furniture in and unpacking things...but I was left a huge mess to put away.....sigh....that is what I have been spending the last few days doing. What DID bring enough of were clothes....our closet here is WAY smaller than what my closet was back home and Dustin and I have to share it. Luckily we have an extra bedroom upstairs, so our off season clothes will be kept there. If you come to visit, hope you do not need closet space ;) Just kidding I will move some of Dusty's clothes for you....

There's no place like home....
When we started the process of moving to Australia, we received LOTS of advice from LOTS of people. As with everything, some of the advice was worthwhile and some would have been better left unsaid.
One piece of advice really stuck in our minds, and at the time seemed a bit odd. But in retrospect was truly excellent advice and we are glad to took it! What was the advice? To go on vacation.... Now I know that this seems like silly advice, because everyone goes on vacation no matter where you live. But the REASONING behind the advice for us, was what was brilliant.
Think back to when you are on vacation...no matter how long or how far the vacation, towards the end, where are you ready to go???? HOME. Up until this point, we have still been referring to "home" as Texas. We never refer to 11 Birrigon Loop as "home". It was always "let's go back to the house", "I am on my way back to the house"...never " I am on the way home".
So the theory behind going on vacation was to help us start referring to Perth as "home". Oddly it seemed to work. Now don't get me wrong, I will always think of Texas as my true home and where our roots are, but it does help to create a sense of belonging and routine here in Perth.
Busselton is a 3 hour drive from Perth and after referring to the maps, not difficult to find. However Dustin and I did come to the conclusion that I am not a natural at reading maps or being a navigator, and it is not easy for Dustin to drive AND navigate at the same time! Thank goodness for Navigation on my phone.
The goal of this trip was not to make ourselves crazy by trying to cram tons of things into one weekend, but instead to relax....and that is exactly what we did! We did visit, The Busselton Jetty, The Lighthouse, Simmon Creamery, Wise Winery, and a fabulous restaurant!
I posted the pictures on Facebook, but here are some of the highlights:
The Busselton Jetty is the 2nd longest Jetty in the world. (Jetty is another name for pier). You can ride a train to the end of the jetty where there is an underwater observatory. You can go down three levels and see a different part of the ocean each time. The final level is the ocean floor. It was amazing to see how different each level was and the marine life on that level. Because the observatory is under a pier, all creatures are animals, not plants. AMAZING! Morgan and Addie had a ball looking at the fish and seeing them in their natural habitat. To finish off our trip, each girl got a mood ring.
The Lighthouse is still functioning and was built in 1903. At that time, 3 families lived at the lighthouse and the men would rotate shifts in manning the lighthouse. Nowadays the lighthouse is manned by a dimmer switch to turn on and off the light. We were able to go up all the way to the top and walk outside of the lighthouse.....the view was breathtaking! Morgan did not join us, because she apparently does not like heights. I thought she had outgrown this....so she sat at the bottom and waited patiently. With the spiders ;)
Wise Winery...let's just say we will save the Winery tours for a time when Dustin and I are in Margaret River by ourselves. Not much there for the girls, and we really did not get to enjoy the time there. I did get to have a sample of several wines and was able to find several to take home. Could not make it wasted trip could I?
The rest of our trip was rather simple and relaxing. It was nice to do nothing for a weekend...including cooking and cleaning ;)
On Monday we packed up and head "home". Not only did we learn to call Perth "home", but I realized that home is not where your things are, or where your house is, but where you are in the moment...where you feel comfortable. They say home is where the heart is, and that is true....but that also means that my "home" is Double Oak, Biloxi, Tomball, AND Perth =)

Kangaroos!!!
Well the day has finally come....the Collier Family saw kangaroos. We knew Addie would be excited, but the rest of us were surprised by how excited we were also!
Up to this point, our weekends have been spent trying to put together our house. All of us are done with shopping.
Also, after being here for a month and a half, I think that we are all getting a bit homesick. The weekends are the hardest time because we do not know other families here yet to hang out with. The girls are getting tired of looking at us and without their toys, things are getting rather boring. Our sea shipment was pushed back a week, so we are going to HOPEFULLY get our things March 6th...hopefully.
SOOOOO, it was time for an outing...Australia style. Caversham Park ( www.cavershamwildlife.com.au/ ) is natural wildlife reserve about 45 minutes north of our house. The descriptions online does not do it justice. The park is actually part of a HUGE park with lots of different things to do. You could spend the entire day there...it is their Six Flags ;) Next time we go we will bring our swimsuits and a picnic. They have a splash pad, picnic areas, PLUS all the animals. It honestly was a great day.
The park is organized by the different regions Australia, and the animals native to that region. We saw birds, flying foxes (bats), Wallabys, Wambats, Koalas, Dingos, reptiles, and of course KANGAROOS!
Morgan has really become interested in animals of all sorts, so she and Dustin were very interested in reading about the different animals, where they came from, etc. Addie and I kept trying to imitate the sounds the animals MIGHT make....we were almost charged by an Emu, got a Parrot to say hello, and annoyed several of the other spectators near us ;)
We thought we were going to get to hold a Koala Bear, but apparently that is against the law in Australia, so we settled for petting one while they were sleeping. Their fur is not as soft as I thought it would be, more fuzzy.
There was an interactive show where they showed us birds, a lizard, a possum, and a wombat. The wombat was the start of the show and quite honestly not that attractive. They are HUGE and reminded us of a pig with fur. She was very sweet though and let her handler hold her like a baby.
In the middle of the park are the kangaroos. You have to go through a double doored gate and then you are free to roam the grounds with the animals. It was incredible that they just were laying around and letting everyone pet them. There were babies, adults and mothers with their babies in their pouch. I did not know they exist, but there were even white kangaroos.
You were able to get food to feed the kangaroos. I think some of them were so lazy because they are fed so much =)

All in all, it was a great day and we are so glad that we went. It goes without saying that when you come to visit, that we will visit Caversham park =)
Each day we count our blessings that we are here in the is beautiful place, but there are also days that are difficult. We miss our family and friends....and everyday normal life.
I got really upset the other day because another expat told me while it is hard to make friends in the new location, it will be harder to go back home and pick up with our friends. She said people do not want to hear about how "wonderful" our life was.... I am here to assure you, that our life will NOT be all wonderful.
So I hope that you still want to hear about our adventures and time here. And please make sure you keep me updated on what is going on with you all! We are interested in that!!!!

We thought we were going to get to hold a Koala Bear, but apparently that is against the law in Australia, so we settled for petting one while they were sleeping. Their fur is not as soft as I thought it would be, more fuzzy.
There was an interactive show where they showed us birds, a lizard, a possum, and a wombat. The wombat was the start of the show and quite honestly not that attractive. They are HUGE and reminded us of a pig with fur. She was very sweet though and let her handler hold her like a baby.
In the middle of the park are the kangaroos. You have to go through a double doored gate and then you are free to roam the grounds with the animals. It was incredible that they just were laying around and letting everyone pet them. There were babies, adults and mothers with their babies in their pouch. I did not know they exist, but there were even white kangaroos.
You were able to get food to feed the kangaroos. I think some of them were so lazy because they are fed so much =)

All in all, it was a great day and we are so glad that we went. It goes without saying that when you come to visit, that we will visit Caversham park =)
Each day we count our blessings that we are here in the is beautiful place, but there are also days that are difficult. We miss our family and friends....and everyday normal life.
I got really upset the other day because another expat told me while it is hard to make friends in the new location, it will be harder to go back home and pick up with our friends. She said people do not want to hear about how "wonderful" our life was.... I am here to assure you, that our life will NOT be all wonderful.
So I hope that you still want to hear about our adventures and time here. And please make sure you keep me updated on what is going on with you all! We are interested in that!!!!
